MTC Kuwait Deploys Motorola Solution

Motorola application services will optimize speed of mobile data and improve network operational efficiency for MTC Kuwait

Motorola, Inc. today announced an agreement with MTC Kuwait to optimize the speed of data services on its network and increase overall operational efficiency.

Under the agreement, MTC Kuwait will deploy Motorola’s Global Applications Management Architecture (GAMA) solution including systems integration and advanced network optimization services which are designed to enhance the mobile data capacity of the operator’s network and improve the performance of mobile data applications even over low-bandwidth connections. The enhanced network will enable users to access mobile web pages and email on the move at a faster rate than previously.

“Providing high quality service is one of the most important aspects of our operation at MTC Kuwait, as is continuous improvement of the data network speeds to meet our customers' expanding mobile communication requirements,” said Barrak Al Sabeeh, general manager, MTC Kuwait.

“There is a growing demand from our customers for mobile data services – applications such as push email – that require a fast and reliable connection to deliver real value to the user. The Motorola GAMA solution that we have rolled out will enable us to deliver the level of service that users require, and add new users to the network, all without having to make substantial new investment in infrastructure, thereby realizing efficiencies,” Al Sabeeh added.

The Motorola GAMA solution accelerates the delivery of data to mobile devices such as PDAs, laptops and mobile phones, and also enables the network to accommodate additional users as required.

“The Motorola GAMA solution, including system integration and network optimization services, offer a wide range of benefits to service providers such as MTC Kuwait. The seamless deployment means that customers will gain the benefits of a faster service, allowing them to get more out of their mobile applications, which in turn encourages them to use those applications even more,” said Ali Amer, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, Motorola Networks & Enterprise.

“For MTC Kuwait, this network optimization ensures full utilization of resources so that new customers can be added easily and efficiently, enabling the operator to get optimal return on investment from its infrastructure,” Amer concluded - Motorola.

Connected: Motorola Q combines cell phone with PDA

With prices coming down on popular cell phones, you'll undoubtedly start to see more people carrying the Motorola Q.

The Q is a competent combination cell phone/personal digital assistant -- a breed known to the industry as the smart phone. Smart because you don't have to carry two devices; smart because your address book gets synchronized with your computer every time you synchronize your PDA. Although not perfect, the Q offers the mobile warrior a variety of tools that he may need and want while out of the office.

First, the Q is a full-featured cell phone -- complete with a large address book that lets you punch in a couple of characters from the middle of a name or phone number to search for that contact; then dial with a single click. Most cell phones make you start from the beginning of the name or number.

Like most high-end cell phones, it has a camera; this one is able to capture photos up to 1.2 megapixels with a 6x zoom -- good enough to capture the moment when you don't want to carry a separate camera.

The PDA is based on Windows-mobile, which is fine for standard contacts management, calendar management and task management -- but the Q doesn't include Pocket Excel or Pocket Word, which you find on many other Windows Mobile devices. That means you can't manipulate spreadsheets or create word processing documents on your PDA. Frankly you wouldn't want to try, because the Q doesn't use a stylus to enter data or navigate. Your interface with the PDA is strictly buttons and knobs.

For a lot of users, this makes it very handy because you don't have to worry about losing the stylus, and it's easy to navigate with one hand. Unfortunately, the lack of stylus means some applications won't work. For instance, Franklin-Covey's PlanPlus Prioritized Tasks and the very popular Pocket Informant information management software can't be used -- even though both products run on Windows Mobile.

Just like with other small devices, the people who engineered the Q had to make some trade-offs. They managed to include an entire QWERTY keyboard on the face of the phone, but the buttons are very small. Plus, to guard them against being pressed by accident, the phone slips into its holster facing inward, which means you can't glance down at the holstered device to see who is calling. You must remove it to look at the face of the phone.

One of the powers of the Q is the combination PDA and cell phone -- which means you can check your e-mail or even send it fairly easily from the road -- just like you might do with a BlackBerry device. If you're a true data junkie, you'll love the fact that it can connect to the high-speed Verizon EV-DO data network.

The interesting issue with the Q is that the designers have incorporated some great ideas that you rarely find, yet at the same time have shorted the user in other areas. The good include a solid, slim body, room for extra flash memory (to store photos, sound files and contacts), and the ability to use either Bluetooth or standard wired headphones. The pains include the backward holster, the small keys and the lack of stylus. So you'll need to figure out which of these items is most important to you before shelling out your dollars for the Q.

If you decide to buy it, though, you'll own a solid workhorse that lets you stay better connected, while roaming whereever you can find cell service.

GAP, Motorola, and Others Losing Focus on Helping Others

When the US frontman Bono started the (product)RED charity, which asks large corporations to advertise certain products and give a percentage of the earnings to help those in Africa and other third-world countries, no one could predict the outcome. While companies like the GAP, Motorola, and American Express have donated at least 1% of the earning from products included in the RED campaign, many are sceptical about the amount of money companies have spent on advertising and if they are more concerned with earning money than helping others.

“Cause-related marketing is not a convenient sticking plaster to put over the inadequacies of a brand. Rather, it will serve to draw attention to them by the media so it needs to be approached with eyes open,” said, Sue Adkins, international director of Business in the Community. The real question is whether consumers are better off donating directly to charities instead of buying T-Shirts, cell phones, and credit cards. While the campaign has raised about US$25 million (£12m), could the same amount or more have been raised through traditional fund raising efforts?

The main controversy is whether companies are using charitable causes to increase their overall sales. The answer is more complex than most people can imagine, because it is impossible to really understand why people buy what they buy and when. While using charitable causes as marketing tools may be considered immoral to some, it is providing funds needed.

Regardless of how the money was raised and the cost of advertising, the good news is that 160,000 Africans are receiving the medications needed to survive and countless others are receiving an education. While consumers need to weigh their options before buying T-Shirts and other items, the RED campaign is earning money that will help those who are less fortunate.

Motorola, vendors to build wireless broadband ecosystem

Motorola, Inc. announced the launch of the MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem, Motorola's portfolio of applications for municipal and enterprise wireless networks. This program offers application solutions that are ready for use on deployments of MOTOwi4 broadband wireless networks. Motorola also announced the availability of municipal video solutions for surveillance that include mesh-enabled Sony IPELA cameras, video management solutions (VMS) and video sharing technologies.

The MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem connects Motorola's wireless broadband access technologies -- Mesh, Canopy, Point-to-Point and eventually WiMAX -- to a comprehensive range of applications. Whether it's integrating wireless parking meter reading to increase city revenue, incorporating video surveillance to support crime reduction or expanding wireless access across the digital divide, the program will provide the applications needed and verified for the MOTOwi4 network.

"Municipalities and service providers are seeking solutions that take a comprehensive approach to supporting the business case for municipal wireless networks," said Roberta Wiggins, research fellow in Yankee Group's Enabling Technologies Service Provider group. "The Motorola MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem is designed to combine broadband wireless hardware with applications that address this need."

Motorola also provides customers with access to outdoor network experts, well versed in the parameters that impact successful deployments who are able to support the design, installation and delivery of the network and the chosen applications.

"Our authorized resellers have made several deployments that integrate our IPELA video surveillance cameras directly with Motorola's hardware. These seamless solutions help meet customers' needs without the confusion of dealing with multiple vendors, essentially giving them one place to get everything to achieve their required return on investment," said Yoshi Hirano, Sony Electronics' senior marketing manager for security products, a MOTOwi4 Ready vendor. "The MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem helps us to have a much broader presence in front of potential municipal wireless customers than we would otherwise. The program also helps us to position our cameras with a market leader in wireless broadband technologies."

The MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem expands Motorola's extensive experience with application developer programs to include companies creating solutions for wireless broadband networks. "It's no secret that applications often drive the business case for installations, which is why we are putting together the applications and hardware that create the solutions customers want," said Jim Welch, vice president, wireless broadband products, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. "We're excited to work with such a large group of industry leading application vendors to create one of the largest and most versatile wireless broadband network solutions available."

Delivering IP applications across customer segments and technologies, the Motorola MOTOwi4 Ready application ecosystem supports Motorola access technologies including Mesh, Point-to-Point, Canopy and eventually WiMAX solutions for private and public networks.

Cell Phone Review: Motorola RIZR Z3

Last week you may remember how I wrote about how I was in the market for a new cell phone. Well I finally made a choice last Wednesday to purchase a Black Licorice Motorola RIZR Z3 from Pure Mobile.

After placing the order, I waited in anticipation for my new gadget to arrive. It finally showed up on Wednesday afternoon, just as I was leaving the office. As I tore through the UPS packaging to get to it, I could tell already that I was going to love this phone.
Features

The RIZR is a Quad-Band GSM slider phone with Wireless EDGE capability. Motorola’s first in the slider form factor, it measures at 4.15” x1.79” x 0.65” and only weighs 3.92 oz. It comes with a brilliant 262k colour display, measuring in at 1.9 inches.

The RIZR also features a 2.0 MP camera, with a fullscreen viewfinder, which also doubles as a video recorder. A high intensity LED camera light is also included, which helps when taking photos in darker places.

In addition to the camera, the RIZR also has a built in MP3 player which supports MP3/AAC/AAC+ audio formats. Bluetooth is also included, which makes it a breeze to get your photos off your phone to your computer (if your computer has Bluetooth enabled).
First Impressions

My first impressions of the phone are great. In comparison to my old v551, the RIZR feels like a solid product with its rubbery exterior and glossy finish. Call quality was excellent. I tested it on the noisy streets of Calgary a couple of times, and each time I could hear the person on the other end perfectly clear. This was a big issue with my old phone, which was virtually unusable in noisy situations.

The camera quality is also decent. While it’s nothing amazing, it will definitely come in handy when I want to take simple pictures while I’m out. You can also turn the phone sideways to take pictures like a standard camera, making its point and shoot function a breeze to use.
Problems

The built in MP3 Player is not very good. I found it hard to use, and in order to use it with headphones you need to buy a special USB headset (a standard plugin for headphones is not built in).

Because the phone is unlocked, and not yet available in North America, means that it came from Europe. While nothing is wrong with the phone itself, this did mean that the included charger came with a European plug. This was somewhat disappointing at first, but extra chargers can be ordered for cheap, or you can pick up a European power adapter from The Source like I did.

Because the phone is black and glossy on the front, it’s also very easy to get fingerprints all over it. While this isn’t a big problem to me, it might be for some people.
Overall

I love this phone and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quality, well built product. It’s easy to use and has great call quality, and is well worth the price.

The Motorola RIZR is available in Licorice Black, Blue and Red. It is currently not available through a major wireless carrier in North America, and needs to be ordered unlocked.

Does Bluetooth crash your Motorola V360?

Does Bluetooth crash your Motorola V360?

I love my Motorola V360 cellphone. It's very geeky, offering USB charging, MP3 ringtones, extra memory card for storage, all that good stuff. I'm having a problem recently, though, and wondering if it's just my phone or everybody's. For Christmas I got a bluetooth headset. Specifically the Motorola v500, which I was led to believe should work just fine, what with both being Motorola products.

The problem is that regularly now (as in, at least once per day) when I'm talking on the headset, my phone will reboot itself. Right in the middle of the conversation, I'll get a blank white screen on the phone, and then it starts up again like I just turned it on. I have to reconnect to the headset and everything. Typically it only happens once and then I'm fine, but yesterday it happened three times. Does this happen to anyone else? Thus far it has only ever happened to me when I am engaged in a conversation via the bluetooth connection. Just leaving bluetooth on doesn't seem to do it. When bluetooth is off completely, I have not had the problem.

Recently I did happen to get a "Check SIM" message out of the clear blue sky, but I'm hoping that's a coincidence. I did pop out the card and reseat it, and the message has not reappeared. I asked a guy at a T-Mobile shop about a possible connection between the two, and he couldn't imagine one. His only suggestion was that perhaps my battery was causing me trouble.

Anybody else?

Unlocked Cingular Motorola SLVR L7

Unlocked Cingular Motorola SLVR L7

Well today I’m putting the phone up for sale, so if you, a friend, co-worker or family member is looking for a great phone with less then 20 hours of actual use on it and looks like it just came out of the box (which it did) and can be used on ANY GSM network world-wide, let me know.

Motorola SLVR L7

This is the Cingular (USA) branded version with iTunes on it. The phone is unlocked and has a clear IMEI so all you need to do is pop your SIM card into the phone and off you go.

If you don’t have a SIM card, go to your local carrier like T-Mobile, Cingular, AT etc and get service with them.

The best part is you don’t need to sign a 2 or 3 year contract with any of them because you’ll already have the phone. You can even use prepaid SIM cards in it.

The phone comes with original box, USB cable and all other accessories (car charger, home charger, battery) some of which are still sealed in the package (see pictures) and a Body Glove case with belt clip.

Motorola SLVR L7

The phone is designed to work on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHZ GSM/GPRS networks (Quad Band World Phone):

* US (850/1900 MHz)
* Canada (1900 MHz)
* Europe Asia/Pacific (900/1800 MHz)

Now the bottom line, this phone retails without a contract for $299.99 USD and would normally be locked to Cingular.

Remember, this unit is unlocked and can be used with any GSM carrier that you have a SIM card for and comes with everything you’ll need to get going, including the Body Glove case.

I’m looking to get $175.00 USD for the phone and if you’re in the USA, I will send the phone to you via FedEx for free.

MOTORIZR Z3

Motorizr Z33G has a review of the MOTORIZR Z3 and writes, "A two-megapixel camera is perched on the rear cover, which you can fire up with a side-dedicated shutter key. Unlike the KRZR, the lens is joined by an LED flashlight that, while it doesn’t work like a proper automatic flash, illuminates your subject before capture. It’s a bit of a hit and miss experience, sometimes causing images to be overblown with light, but when you get it right it can highlight darkened areas nicely. ... The pictures themselves are good for a two-megapixel lens and show nice detail and focus, if a little washed out at times. One gripe is the fact you can’t send a photo via Bluetooth straight after capture. Instead you have to access it via your image library before sending wirelessly, which is a bit irritating."
